Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
As buyers ask AI instead of searching, GEO is how you stay in the answer — making your site legible and citable to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews.
A growing share of buyers no longer search and click — they ask. They put their question to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, or Copilot, and they act on the single answer that comes back. If those systems don’t know your business, or cite a competitor instead of you, you are simply invisible to that entire channel — and it is one of the fastest-growing ways people decide who to hire.
Generative Engine Optimization is the work of making your site legible and citable to those engines. Not tricks, not fake authority — just being the clearest, most-consistent, most-accurate source on the questions your buyers ask, so that when a model writes its answer, yours is the business it reaches for. I do that work remote-first from Fort Worth and across the DFW metro.
What GEO actually is
Generative engines don’t rank a list of links for you to pick from — they read the web, decide what they believe is true, and generate one answer. GEO is making sure that when they read you, they come away with clean, unambiguous facts and a strong sense of who you are. That means a well-defined entity — who you are, exactly what you do, and where — backed by consistent authority signals rather than scattered, contradictory ones.
- Entity definition: clear, plain factual statements about the business — name, service, and service area stated the same way everywhere, so a model has one coherent picture to cite.
- Structured authority: schema.org Organization and LocalBusiness markup with
sameAslinks to your real, verifiable profiles — the cross-references that let an engine confirm you are who you say. - An llms.txt policy: a machine-readable file that signals to AI crawlers which content is canonical and worth using — an emerging convention this site already ships.
- Citable content: pages that directly answer the buying questions people actually ask AI, written as facts a model can lift and attribute cleanly.
- A current baseline: a check of what the major engines say about you today, so the work targets real gaps instead of guesses.
How it differs from SEO and AEO
GEO shares its foundation with the other two disciplines — it is aimed at a third audience. Classic SEO is about ranking in ordinary search results. AEO is about winning the featured snippet or the assistant’s answer box. GEO is about being the source an AI model quotes inside the answer it writes from scratch. The same clean structured data, unambiguous facts, and question-shaped content feed all three; GEO layers on the entity modeling and cross-referencing that get you into the generated output rather than the list beneath it.
The method is unglamorous on purpose: define the entity clearly, get the structured data and its cross-references right, publish citable facts, and measure what the major engines say about the business before and after. Because entity and authority modeling and clean structured data are systems work, I approach it the way I approach any other system — with five years of production infrastructure and security engineering behind the implementation, it is precise rather than hand-wavy.
The honest limits
I will not oversell this. No one controls what a model outputs, and there is no guaranteed citation to sell you — anyone promising one is guessing or lying. There are also no prompt-injection tricks and no manufactured authority in this work, because those get you flagged, not cited. What you can do is make yourself the easiest, most-consistent, most-accurate source to cite, and sharply reduce the chance an engine gets your business wrong.
The proof is this site: it declares a full Organization and Person knowledge graph with sameAs cross-references and ships an llms.txt — the same standard I hold client work to. If you want to know whether the AI engines even know your business exists, tell me the domain and what you sell, and I will come back the same day with a fit assessment and either a quote or a referral.
Common questions
Can you guarantee ChatGPT or Perplexity will cite my business?
No — and treat anyone who guarantees it with suspicion. Nobody controls what a generative model outputs, and there is no such thing as a guaranteed citation. What I can do is make you the easiest, most-consistent, most-accurate source to cite: clean facts, a strong entity definition, correct structured data, and an llms.txt policy. That is the honest lever, and it is the one that actually moves.
How is GEO different from SEO and AEO?
Same foundation, a third audience. SEO is ranking in classic search; AEO is winning the snippet or the assistant’s answer box; GEO is being the source an AI model quotes inside the answer it generates. One clean, well-structured, factually consistent site serves all three — GEO just adds the entity and citation work that gets you into the model’s output rather than the results page.
How do you know where I stand with the AI engines today?
I check. Part of the work is asking the major engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, Copilot — what they currently say about your business, and recording it as a baseline. That shows whether they know you at all, whether they get you right, and whether they are handing your buyers to a competitor. Then the fixes are aimed at the gaps that baseline exposes.
Have a project like this?
Tell me the environment, the timeline, and your constraints. I reply the same business day with a fit assessment and either a quote or a referral.
